Meet Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum: What It Is, What It's Good For, and How to Use It

When it comes to skincare ingredients, retinoids are considered the “gold standard” for a reason—they’re backed by decades of research that support their ability to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smooth skin texture, fade the look of dark spots, and support collagen, helping skin appear firmer and more resilient over time.

But even with all this science to back it up, retinoids are still an intimidating category for a lot of people. Some experience irritation, dryness, redness, or flaking—a.k.a. the “retinoid uglies.” This can make it hard for people to stay consistent, so they end up abandoning their retinoid before they see results.

That’s why we launched Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum, our first-ever retinal serum. Its thoughtful and hydrating formula is highly effective, stable, and designed to help minimize sensitivity so you can finally stay consistent with a retinoid. Keep reading to learn more about what Firm Revival does, who it’s for, and how it fits into your skincare routine.

Why We Made a Retinal Serum

Retinol and retinal—yes, they’re different!—are both retinoids, a family of topical vitamin A derivatives used in skincare. They both deliver similar benefits: improving the look of fine lines and wrinkles, uneven tone, and texture, while also supporting collagen. However, the main difference between the two lies in the conversion process.

For a retinoid to deliver its benefits, it needs to be converted to retinoic acid, the active form that binds to the retinoid receptors in the skin. The fewer conversion steps a retinoid must undergo to become retinoic acid, the faster it can deliver benefits for your skin. Retinol requires two conversion steps before becoming retinoic acid, while retinal only needs one step.

Even though retinol is the most common over-the-counter retinoid, we chose to formulate Firm Revival with retinal because it’s the most potent retinoid you can get without a prescription. It can deliver results more quickly and efficiently than retinol. It’s a great option for people who find tretinoin—which is already in the active form of retinoic acid and only available by prescription—too harsh but still want a fast-acting, effective formula.

Retinal might be more potent than retinol, but that doesn’t mean using it will automatically irritate your skin or that you’ll have to deal with the “retinal uglies.” In fact, we made Firm Revival with this challenge in mind—it’s formulated with deeply soothing ingredients (more on that later), so you get the benefits of a retinal, but in a formula designed to minimize sensitivity and calm the skin.

Who Is Firm Revival Good For?

Firm Revival is a great choice for anyone looking to incorporate a retinal into their routine or switch to a formula that’s better suited for sensitive skin. It’s designed for those looking to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, uneven texture, loss of firmness, and dark spots, while also being gentle enough for retinoid beginners, retinoid skeptics, and those who have experienced dryness, flaking, or irritation from other retinoids.

Plus, it is one of the few retinoid formulas awarded the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance. This recognition highlights Firm Revival’s ability to deliver powerful results without compromising sensitive skin.

Inside Firm Revival: Next-Generation Retinal

When developing Firm Revival, it was important for us to create a high-performance formula that delivered potent retinal benefits while remaining gentle on the skin. To do this, we partnered with a specialized supplier to create our own never-before-used technology.

Firm Revival’s hero ingredient is a 0.05% next-gen retinal. You may have heard of encapsulation; it’s a technology that houses retinal in a protective shell to help improve stability and efficacy. Our next-gen retinal takes this one step further. Instead of relying on one protective layer of encapsulation, our retinal uses a multi-phase delivery system that stacks sequential layers to help stabilize the retinal, control the release, and minimize sensitivity.

We also included a 2% algae retinoid booster in Firm Revival. It’s a biotech, algae-derived ingredient that’s been found to support collagen, boost the effects of retinoids, improve skin’s hydration levels, and reduce sensitivity.

Firm Revival is also formulated with a 16% Hydro-Calming Blend designed to soothe and support hydrated skin. Inside the blend, you’ll find glycerin and allantoin, comforting humectants that draw water into the skin; snow mushroom extract, an ingredient that’s 400x more hydrating than hyaluronic acid; bisabolol and gromwell root complex, two antioxidants that ease redness; and d-panthenol, a skin barrier-supporting ingredient. There’s also 0.1% licorice root derivative in the formula—it’s an antioxidant that helps further calm the skin.

With any new product you add to your routine, your skin may need a little time to adjust. But Firm Revival is designed to be gentle. These hydrating and calming ingredients help keep the skin barrier soft, smooth, and resilient, so you can use Firm Revival consistently enough to see results.

How to Use Firm Revival

At night, apply 1-2 pumps of Firm Revival to clean, dry skin. While Firm Revival is formulated to be gentle enough for daily use, for new retinoid users or those with really sensitive skin, we recommend starting 2-3 times a week and gradually building up to nightly use.

Apply Firm Revival before any additional serums (from the thinnest formula to the thickest). But if you’re using Firm Revival with Deliverance 3-in-1 Repair Serum, apply Deliverance first, then allow your skin to fully dry before applying Firm Revival. Order doesn’t really matter here, but Deliverance has a lighter texture, so using it first helps ensure both absorb seamlessly into the skin.

Finish up your routine with a richer moisturizer like Instant Angel Lipid-Rich Firming Moisturizer or Skin Mercy Recovery Cream to help support your skin barrier even more.

Instant Angel is formulated with ceramides, lipids that work to support the skin barrier, reduce transepidermal water loss, and calm sensitivity. In a clinical study with daily application of Instant Angel, 100% of people had improvement in skin barrier function and visible plumpness in 24 hours.*

And Skin Mercy is a treatment moisturizer formulated with 1% colloidal oatmeal, an FDA-approved skin protectant that helps calm visible redness, dryness, itch, and irritation. In a clinical study of 34 panelists with self-perceived sensitive skin, 100% of people had a significant improvement in barrier function and hydration on application.**

Since retinoids can leave your skin more prone to UV damage, especially when you first start using them, wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen every single day is a must. (If you’ve got general questions about sunscreen, you can find answers here.)

Why Consistency is the Key to Retinoid Results

Remember, skincare only works when you use it consistently. Retinoids, especially, are a long-game ingredient. Just like strength training requires consistency to build muscle, retinoids work by supporting your skin’s renewal process over time.

In a clinical study with daily use of Firm Revival***:

After 2 weeks:

      • 96% of people had a significant improvement in skin texture

      • 100% of people had a significant improvement in skin radiance

After 4 weeks:

      • 90% of people had a significant reduction in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

      • 100% of people had a significant improvement in visible firmness

After 8 weeks:

      • 90% of people had a significant reduction in the appearance of dark spots

      • 93% of people had a significant reduction in the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles

Choosing the right retinoid for your skin and using it consistently is what supports long-term, visible results.

Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum FAQs

What's the difference between retinol and retinal?

The main difference between retinol and retinal is how many steps they take to convert into retinoic acid. Retinol requires two conversion steps, while retinal requires only one, making it faster and more potent.

Is Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum good for beginners?

Formulated with 0.05% next-gen retinal and a 16% Hydro-Calming Blend, Firm Revival delivers visible firming and smoothing benefits while remaining gentle on the skin, making it great for first-time retinoid users.

Can those with sensitive skin use Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum?

Yes! Firm Revival was formulated to deliver effective retinal benefits while prioritizing skin comfort and minimizing sensitivity. In fact, it even earned the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance, which is rare for a retinoid formula and shows how gentle Firm Revival is.

Just remember, even with a great formula, it's always a good idea to do a quick patch test first and take a gradual approach by using it just a few nights a week at first to let your skin adjust at its own pace.

What moisturizer should I use with Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum?

Use a deeply nourishing moisturizer like Instant Angel or Skin Mercy to help support the skin barrier and provide comfort while you’re using a retinoid.

Are there any products or ingredients I should avoid with Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum?

There are certain ingredients that don’t mix well with retinoids, and using them together can cause irritation, weaken the skin’s protective barrier, and reduce effectiveness.

Pairing alpha hydroxy acids (like glycolic and lactic acid), beta-hydroxy acids (like salicylic acid), and keratolytic exfoliants (like azelaic acid and benzoyl peroxide) with retinoids can cause dryness, irritation, and redness. To avoid this, use the exfoliant in the mornings when you aren’t applying Firm Revival or on alternating nights if you aren’t using Firm Revival daily.

When vitamin C and retinoids are combined, they react in a way that causes both ingredients to become less effective. If using both, opt for vitamin C in the morning and Firm Revival at night to make sure both ingredients remain potent.

Can I use Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum around my eyes?

Yes! Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum is ophthalmologist-tested and has undergone ocular safety testing, which has deemed it safe for use around the eyes, including for sensitive skin and contact lens wearers. As always, everyone’s skin is different, so we recommend patch testing and discontinuing use if any irritation occurs.

Can I use Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum every day?

While Firm Revival is formulated to be gentle enough for daily use, for new retinoid users or those with really sensitive skin, we recommend starting 2-3 times a week for two weeks and gradually building up to nightly use.

Is Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum fragrance-free?

Yes, Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum is fragrance-free.

Why is Firm Revival HydroRetinal Firming Serum in plastic packaging?

Firm Revival is in plastic because the formula needed it. Retinal is highly sensitive to light and oxygen, so protecting our hero ingredient’s potency meant opting for airless, opaque plastic packaging.

We’ll continue exploring more sustainable alternatives to plastic. Until then, through our partnership with rePurpose Global, we are Certified Plastic Negative, which means that we are committed to removing more plastic waste from nature than we produce.
